Neil Young wrote "Helpless" in 1969 as a bittersweet meditation on childhood and lost innocence, rooted in his memories of Omemee, a small rural town in Ontario where he spent his formative years. Though he contracted polio there at age five and later endured his parents' divorce, the song isn't simply about pain — it's about the pull of a place and time you can never fully return to. Most famously recorded with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on Déjà Vu (1970), it remains one of rock's most quietly devastating songs.
