Dylan wrote "Forever Young" in Tucson, Arizona, around 1973 as a lullaby for his eldest son Jesse (born 1966), expressing a father's hopes that his child would remain strong and happy. He drew inspiration from the Book of Numbers in the Torah — reforging the priestly blessing "May the Lord bless you and guard you" into a personal lullaby. Released on *Planet Waves* (1974) in both a slow and uptempo version, Dylan has also said the song was partly a response to Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," which had been bothering him because it sounded too much like his own style.
